What is a differential used for? The major purpose is torque distribution that is transmitted from the engine, via the gearbox and the reducer ring lockers between the right and the left wheels of the vehicle.
Four-wheel drive Ssangyong vehicles are equipped with a front axle reducer differential without a self-locking function i.e. it is a basic standard fitting. So, planetary gears and gear axles can be subject to breakdown. But, actually, this is rare.
Now let’s talk about faults of the rear axle limited-slip differential (LCD) in SsangYong vehicles. Unfortunately, a differential breakdown in cars with low mileage is a rather frequent event. It usually happens despite road conditions– it can happen in urban conditions or off-road, it can be low mileage (there are cases when it breaks down after 30,000-40,000 km) or medium mileage for vehicles of this class – 120,000-140,000 km.
This part is manufactured with major design defects: a differential gearbox has poor welded joints and an unreliable design of planetary gears and axles, which leads to premature failure of the whole unit. The most frequent reason for differential failure is the failure of the welded connection of the body itself. Such a small number of welding spots cannot carry the loads that come from the rear and the front axle reducers, so weld failure occurs with quite unpredictable consequences. The gears and planetary gear axles cannot withstand the load either, and it’s not a rare case when gear teeth are crushed and axles are broken. These failures are typical of LCD differentials as the tension is higher than in the non-LSD reducer.
The minimal requirement for this reducer is the replacement of the differential itself, as well as bearings and sealing glands. Depending on the situation when the breakdown occurs (harsh road conditions, high speeds, etc.), the fragmenting parts may damage the ring lockers and half-axles, which can lead to the need to replace many parts, or the entire axle.
So what can you do if that happens? The first option that comes to the mind is purchasing and mounting a used (second hand) axle assembly. But I have to caution you from doing this. First of all, it’s very difficult to find an axle with the same reduction ratio and transmission type (KSC or Tongil) as was originally installed in your vehicle (when the ratio is different, both axles and the transfer gearbox will fail). The problem is not the small number of used parts available, but that the seller rarely has all the necessary information on the parts being sold. Secondly (and mainly), you never know how old the replacement axle is (you wouldn’t get a warranty for such parts). Now, imagine an axle with the same characteristics and proper operating conditions!!!! In this situation you have a much better chance of knowing how long this axle will stay operable.
So, the best option is axle-overhauling, using brand-new spare parts. There are two options here – mounting a non-LCD deferential (which is not appropriate for a vehicle that is used in harsh conditions and requires modifying) or a differential with a new design. The Ssangyong factory considered all design and technological drawbacks of this part, and designed and launched the production of a differential that is totally new when compared with the previous version (see the pictures).
The most noticeable difference is that the body is one-piece rather than welded, which eliminates part failure. Internal configuration is rated in such a way that the loads are distributed more evenly, and all parts are also more robust. The operating principle has also been changed. Both types (with and without an LCD) can be mounted without any problem when replacing the old model. So it’s up to you to decide….. Take a risk.…..Play it safe!!!
